The Massachusetts ACDA Summer Conference for Choral Musicians

MassACDA welcomes all choral conductors to its summer conference.

Clinicians

Dr. Jerry Blackstone, University of Michigan  
Jerry Blackstone is Director of Choirs and Chair of the Conducting Department at the University of Michigan where he conducts the Chamber Choir, teaches conducting at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and administers a choral program of ten choirs. He also conducts operatic productions with the University of Michigan Opera Theatre and frequently prepares choirs for performances with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra under such conductors as Nicholas McGegan and Itzhak Perlman. Professor Blackstone has served as guest conductor from coast to coast, including recent all-state and festival appearances in Texas, California, Georgia, New York, Virginia, South Dakota, Florida, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Rhode Island, Oregon, Ohio, Illinois, and Michigan, and internationally in Hong Kong and Ontario, Canada  

Dr. Alexander Dashnaw, Long Island University  

Dr. Alexander Dashnaw, Director of Choral Activities and Chairman of the Department of Music at the CW Post Campus of Long Island University, has been a guest conductor of many festival, divisional, regional, and all-state choruses.  He has conducted choral/vocal workshops at schools and universities and for the American Guild of Organists (AGO), the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA), the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), the New York State Choral Guild, and the Music Educators National Conference (MENC). He has been the artistic director of many choral festivals, including the Manhattan, Chicago, Pacific and Atlanta, the Jubilee and Capitol in Washington, DC, the Strathclyde in Scotland and the Tilles Invitational on Long Island.  

Joan Gregoryk, Children’s Chorus of Washington

Joan Gregoryk, Founder and Music Director of the Children’s Chorus of Washington, is internationally recognized as a leader in the field of children’s vocal music. Ms. Gregoryk taught for many years at Chevy Chase Elementary School where her work with the school’s chorus won her considerable acclaim within professional music organizations, as well as invitations to perform within the United States and Europe. She prepared members of the Chevy Chase Chorus for the Grammy Award-nominated compact disc and film soundtrack recording of Mussorgsky’s Boris Gudunov with Mstislav Rostropovich and the National Symphony Orchestra. She has prepared choruses for appearances with orchestras under conductors Rafael Fruebeck de Burgos, Erich Leinsdorf, Mstislav Rostropovich, Erich Kunzel, Leonard Slatkin, Dante Anzolini and Yuri Temirkanov. Because of her achievements, Ms. Gregoryk has been awarded numerous honors including Outstanding Arts Educator in the United States by the Rockefeller Brothers Funds Awards in Arts Education and the Maryland Outstanding Elementary Music Educator.  

Dr. Michele Holt, Providence College

Dr. Michele Holt, Director of Choral Activities at Providence College, is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island where she received both a Bachelor of Music and a Masters of Arts in Music Education.  She received a Doctor of Musical Arts in choral conducting at the Hartt School of Music where she completed research in Laban Movement Theory and its application to choral conducting and performance.  Michele has studied conducting with James Jordan, Rodney Eichenberger, Elaine Brown, Howard Swan, Gerald Mack, Peter Bagley and Allen Lannom.  Michele has conducted All State and Regional Festivals in Connecticut, New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Florida and has been clinician to numerous choral adjudication festivals, including the Manhattan Choral Festival and East Tennessee Vocal Association.  She has been an active adjudicator for All State auditions throughout the New England area and has been a clinician at both state and divisional conferences.

Graduate Credit

Gordon College offers MassACDA Summer Conference participants 1 graduate credit from its Master of Music Education program for an additional fee of $200.  Enclose with registration a separate check made payable to Gordon College.  Those registering to receive graduate credit will be asked to complete a short application for credit form during conference registration.

On-Campus Housing

Conference housing is provided on the campus of Gordon College in the form of singles and 2-bedroom suites. Registration for on-campus housing includes Sunday dinner through Wednesday lunch.

Off-Site Lodging

Through special arrangement with Quality Inn/King's Grant Inn in Danvers, MA, a limited number of rooms are available at a discounted rate (first come, first served).  Mention Gordon College Summer Workshops when making your reservations, at 978-774-6800.  Other off-site lodging is available at hotels and motels in the vicinity of Gordon College, should you wish to make your own arrangements.  You can see a listing of nearby facilities by clicking here.

Meals

The price of meals from Sunday dinner through Wednesday lunch is included in the on-campus registration fee.  If you are arranging off-campus lodging, meals may be purchased as indicated on the registration form here.

Air Conditioning

All conference facilities, including campus housing, are air conditioned.
