MassACDA Summer Conference 2002 Clinicians INTEREST SESSION LEADER
Dr.
Kenneth Phillips is a professor of music and the director of graduate
studies in music education at Gordon College, Wenham, Massachusetts. He is
also professor emeritus at The University of Iowa, where he taught for 17
years. He is an award-winning researcher and teacher whose experience
includes all levels of choral directing, children through adults. Professor
Phillips has a broad background in music. He is currently writing a choral
methods book for Oxford University Press and is the author of
two books: Teaching Kids to Sing (Schirmer Books) and
Basic Techniques of
Conducting (Oxford University Press). His research related to group vocal
pedagogy is available in leading journals, and he has presented numerous
workshop sessions in the United States, Canada and Australia. He has been
named by MENC and the Iowa Music Educators Association as one of the 12
outstanding "accomplished" music educators at all levels in the
State of Iowa. He
holds a bachelor's degree from Westminster College (PA) and a Master of
Music from West Virginia University. He earned his Ph.D. in choral music
from Kent State University. His major conducting study was with Vance
George, the Grammy award-winning director of the San Francisco Symphony
Chorus. Dr. Phillips is a life member of the ACDA. Last revised March 04, 2006.
